Arnald George
(1763—1841)

English painter, probably born in Berkshire, although one account dating from 1808 states that he was born in Farndip, near Northampton. Little else is known of his youth or background. He began his adult life as a domestic servant before choosing to train as a professional artist under the landscape painter, William Pether. Arnald became a prolific painter of landscapes and genre pictures, exhibiting 176 works at the Royal Academy and 63 at the British Institution. He achieved some success and was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1810. His work was engraved in a publication of the ‘Antiquities of England and Scotland’ (1814). Although not known as a marine painter, he received great acclaim for his painting of the ‘Battle of the Nile’, exhibited at the British Institution in 1827. This was one of four modern historical pictures commissioned for £500 each on a competitive basis by the BI, expressly for presentation to the new Naval Gallery in the Painted Hall of Greenwich Hospital, opened in 1824. Arnald’s sketch had figured in the BI exhibition of 1825 and the finished picture is now in the National Maritime Museum (NMM), London (Greenwich Hospital Collection). Arnald’s pupils included his son and daughter, who both became exhibiting artists, and Henry William Pickersgill (1782–1875), whose work can also be seen in the NMM. He died in Pentonville, London, on 21 November 1841.
