Dumas Thomas-Alexandre(1762—1806)

Illegitimate son of Alexandre-Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie and a negress, Marie-Cessèle Dumas. He grew up tall and very strong, and entered the regiment of Dragons de la Reine as a trooper on 2 June 1786 under the name of Dumas. He was made corporal in 1792. He then served in the Army of the North, and was promoted lieutenant in the Hussards de la Liberté on 2 September 1792. Eventually promoted general of brigade on 30 July 1793, and general of division on 3 September 1793. Went to the Army of Italy under Kilmaine in November 1796. Wounded twice on 23 March 1797 in the Tyrol while under Joubert. Participated in the Egyptian campaign. During the Consulate he was placed in retirement because he was too Republican. Died of illness. Father of the writer Alexandre Dumas.
