Milev (Милев) Geo (1895—1925)

Geo Milev was a Bulgarian poet and author. Already in 1919, in the wake of Bulgaria's defeat in World War I, Milev's communist leanings and utopian views were disseminated among the public in Vezni, a family-controlled periodical that promoted a rebellious Expressionism close to that of Germany's left-leaning Novembergruppe. Although not yet prepared to renounce completely the national disposition to symbolism, Milev increasingly exploited Expressionism for its political dynamism; accordingly, Vezni advanced the innovative graphic work of Ivan Milev, Sirak Skitnik, and Mircho Kachulev, among other Bulgarian pioneers of postwar Expressionism. Milev's Septemvri (September), an anthology of revolutionary writings that included his eponymous poem, carried a cover with the most fully realized Constructivism to be seen publicly in Bulgaria.
