Kupala (Купала) Yanka
(the pen-name of Ivan Dominikovich Lutsevich)
(1882—1942)

A classic of Belarusian literature, the founder (together with Jakub Kolas) of the modern Belarusian literature and Belarusian literature language. People's Poet Of Belarus. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus (1928) and of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukraine (1929). Born in the village of Vyazynka of Vileika District (now -- Minsk oblast), graduated from Belarusian People's College. In 1905 he published his first verse in Belarusian, "The Peasant" and in 1908 his first book of collected verses, "Reed-pipe" appeared. The creator of Belarusian national comedy ("Pavlinka", 1913) and drama ("Ruined Nest", 1919), of a classical poem ("Barrow", 1912; "Bobdarouna", 1913; "She and Me", 1930; "Unnamed", 1924; "Over the Oressa River", 1933; "Taras' Lot", 1939). He is an author of more that 1,000 verses, 19 poems, 4 plays.
