de la Selva Salomon (1893—1959)

Salomon de la Selva was born in Leon in 1893. When he was 13 years old, he went to the United States to study. He attended renowned universities such as Williams College and Cornell University, becoming a poet in two languages and two cultures.

He wrote for prestigious magazines in the United States, such as Poetry of Chicago, and enjoyed friendships with famous writers of that country. He was also linked to socialist circles in New York and some of his works reflect this connection.

His poems include: Tropical Town and Other Poems, published in New York in 1918, which reflects his nostalgia for Nicaragua. He also wrote El Soldado Desconocido, published in Mexico in 1922, one of the best appreciated of all his works. This book is about his experiences as a soldier in Europe.

It is important to highlight that Salomon de la Selva is the founder of Vanguardist poetry and that he spent some of the significant years of his career in Mexico. Other titles among his works are: Evocación de Horacio, written in 1949; La ilustre familia, in 1954; Canto a la Independencia Nacional de México, in 1955; Evocación de Píndaro, in 1957, and, finally, Acolmixtli y Nezahuatlcóyotl, in 1958.
