Guzzardi Leonardo
(active 1798–99)

Italian painter. He would probably have been forgotten if not for his important full-length portrait of Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson as the hero of the Battle of the Nile, 1 August 1798, probably painted at the Neapolitan court in Palermo in 1799. This exists in several oil and print versions and is the only indication of the artist’s late-neoclassical style. His clear attempt at refined elegance has resulted here in elongated proportions and forms that lack solidity in an otherwise elaborate depiction of the sitter with numerous references to his rank and achievements.
