Jókai Mór
(1825—1904)

Jókai Mór (1825—1904)

Hungarian romantic novelist and journalist. Jókai was a fervent nationalist who, after the Hungarian defeat in 1848, became a fugitive from the Austrians. He was later a member (1861–97) of the Hungarian parliament. Often compared to both Dickens and Scott, Jókai was an enormously prolific and popular writer. His novels, national in character, often earthy and humorous in style, have been translated into 25 languages. Among them are An Hungarian Nabob (1894, tr. 1898) and Black Diamonds (1870, tr. 1896).
