Heliade Rădulescu Ion (1802—1872)

Ion Heliade Rădulescu was a Romanian academician, writer, editor, prolific translator of foreign literature into Romanian, politician, teacher at the Saint Sava College in Bucharest, considered by most the foremost Romanian culture representative of the first period of the 19th century.

He was called "The father of the Romanian literature" and a statue is dedicated to him in Bucharest. He is "the second great personality of the Romanian literature after D. Cantemir" (G. Calinescu) He is born in Târgoviste, son of Ilie Radulescu. Greek school from Schitu Magureanu. Highschool Sf. Sava from Bucharest where he helps Gh. Lazar, being, after his retirement, his succesory. Will teach here Romanian and mathematics. Pubishes in Sibiu Gramatica Româneasca (1828). Set up the first newspaper Curierul românesc (1829), followed by a literary supplement Curierul de ambe sexe (1837). In 1836, publishes all his literary works in the volume Culegeri din scrierile lui I. Eliade de proze si de poezie. Participates at the preparations of the 1848 Revolution, writes the Izlaz Proclamation, is member of the provisional government end is bannished from the country. Lives for 10 years in Paris, Constantinopole and Chios Island. Only in 1859 he returns from exile.

He was in the moderate side of the political life, being against radicale wing of the revolutionaries. He was against foreign intervention in Romania, against giving land to socmans, for total sepparation from the Russian influence and for a understanding with Turkey. Many of the friends become his enemies. Will be very furious againt his adversaries.

Writer, philosopher and cultural guide, Heliade domines half a century of Romanian poetry. He have had great plans but did not finishes them. Tries all species of the lirical genre, but his works are unbalanced: some excellent, some poor, without colour. He was very gifted for satirical poems and fables in prose, where he has talent, also his satirical spirit is distinguished. The most important work is the first Echilibru între antiteze, sketch of a philosophical system.
