Tomić Josip Eugen (1843—1906)

Josip Eugen Tomić was born on October 18, 1843 in Požega where he spent the first fifteen years of life and completed his elementary education. The beauty of his native town, the rich life and the strong echoes of the Croatian National Movement left a deep impact on the mind of the young man, who was soon to become one of the most popular Croatian writers of his time. His «Pošurice» published in 1887 displayed a remarkable insight into the peculiarities and humorous aspects of the life in the provinces. In 1879 Tomić published his first historical novel «Zmaj od Bosne» (The Dragon from Bosnia). The assignment to finish Šenoa's novel «Kletva» (The Curse) increased Tomić's interest for historical themes and he produced several historical novels such as: «Kapetanova kći» (The Captain's Daughter), «Emin-agina ljubav» (Emin-agha's Love), «Za kralja-za dom» (For the King-For the Homeland, vol l, ll) ... Versatility, literary skill and the purity of his language, his devotion to his readers and his patriotism are the main features of Josip Eugen Tomić's work.
