Klosterman Karel (1848—1923)

Karel Klostermann, the writer, a representative of realism and the so-called countryside prose, was born in Haag bei Linz. His father, a physician, was a German national. Klostermann studied at the grammar school in Klatovy and Písek; he left the medical faculty in Vienna before finishing the studies. For many years he was a French and German teacher at the German Realschule in Plzeň. He started writing in German, later on in Czech. He devoted the whole of his literary work to his beloved, although harsh Šumava Mountains and the lives of the local population. The tales and novels, depicting with mastery the local life and traditions, were to a large extent based on real events. He put a great emphasis on depicting the Šumava landscape and wildlife. As the author of about one hundred and sixty tales and novels some of which are still published, he belongs to the most prolific Czech prosaists. One of his best proses is the novel «Mlhy na Blatech» showing the characteristic features of South Bohemian farmers and the peculiar wildlife of the region. Klostermann spent the last years of his life in Štěkna in the Strakonice region where he also died.
