«The Littlest Rebel»

Edward Henry Peple was an American playwright. Born in Richmond, Virginia, he turned to writing after a long career in railroading. Although well over a dozen of his plays were produced, only two were major successes: The Prince Chap (1904) and A Pair of Sixes (1914). Two other less popular plays are of passing interest: the Civil War melodrama The Littlest Rebel (1911) and the musical The Charity Girl (1912). The latter was shut down by the police in one city because of objections to the lyric for “I'd Rather Be a Chippie than a Charity Bum.”
