Koster Simon de
(1767—1831)

A Dutch artist who had studied under Thomas Gaal at the Middelsburg Academy, later settled in London to pursue his profession and became well known, even becoming acquainted with royalty. He produced a portrait of the Prince of Wales. De Koster drew Nelson from life on 8th December 1800; according to the artist, it was painted for Lady Hamilton. Various copies were produced and one version was worn by Lady Hamilton in a locket round her neck.
